Negombo to Ella by Bus

Take the public bus to Ella if you prefer budget travelling. There are no direct buses from Negombo to Ella, so so you’ll need to travel to Colombo first.

During the daytime, you’ll find multiple bus departures from Negombo to Colombo, offering a range of options. You can choose between regular route buses, expressway buses for a quicker journey, or a private taxi to reach the central bus station in Colombo. From there, you can catch a bus heading to Colombo to Badulla. This journey takes approximately 6 to 8 hours. Once you arrive at Kubalwewa Junction, you’ll need to take another taxi for a 15-minute ride to Ella.

By Train

While trains typically offer budget-friendly transfer options, there are no direct train routes connecting Negombo and Ella. If you’re considering a train journey, there are a few important factors to keep in mind.

First, you’ll need to travel to Colombo Fort Central Railway Station, which is approximately 40 kilometers from Negombo. Since Negombo is a subsidiary train station, train departures are less frequent, potentially leading to long waits, especially if you miss a train. If you arrive late, your wait time could be significantly extended, making the train journey from Negombo to Colombo less reasonable.

Alternatively, you have two other options: taking an express bus via the expressway, which is comfortable and speedy, or arranging a private taxi, which is fast but more expensive. Once you reach Colombo Fort Central Train Station, you can purchase your tickets. However, there’s typically only one train operating per day, and seats may be limited. While the train ride offers stunning scenery, it can take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours, and train departures may occasionally be canceled, requiring you to seek alternatives.
